I bought this to be an extension, with the bonus of having the volume controls and pause/play button. It is just a little to short to be a great extension, but of course that is going to vary by need. It's well made and works very well. The control unit is very square, so I don't think it'd be comfortable in a pocket, but you'll likely have this clipped to your shirt or bag, and it will function just fine there. I am using it as an extension for my MacBook headphones and the volume and pause buttons work great on the Mac too.
